Omg, my teacher told me today that I am the second in level for Math! YAYYYYY! :D Lolol, getting second for Math out of 1100+ people compromising quite a number of Math whizzes is seriously very tough and I would say it is a one-off event… Hence, it’s really something to be overjoyed about! :) So please don’t say I’m making a big deal out of it.

Woe

I was so unlucky today. I was walking with an ice-cream cone in my hand. Suddenly, my classmate tried to warn me about something but it was too late; a frisbee hit, not my arm, not my waist, not anywhere else, but my hand, and I dropped my half-eaten cone. How sad, zzz. :( But argh, why couldn’t the frisbee hit somewhere else?

After being bedridden for 2 days, it was time to start full engine on SAT during the weekends. Spent Saturday going through Princeton Review’s tips and tricks of tackling SAT, and Sunday doing two practice tests. Scored 2090 and 2120 (out of 2400) respectively for them, but that’s by assuming I get 6/12 for the essay. I must do better than that for the real thing – is 2200 a realistic goal? :|

By the way, coincidentally, for both tests, I scored 790/800 for the Math component and 670/800 for the Writing component (consisting of grammar and essay). I am targeting an 800 for Math – shouldn’t be difficult! :) As for the Writing, I used a low 6/12 essay score, so I’m hoping I can score close to 10 for the real essay, and that would bring the 670 to at least a 700.

The last component – Critical Reading – is the most problematic one. The reading comprehensions are so soo tricky… Scored 630 for first one, and 660 for second one. I’m gonna aim for a 700 too. 800+700+700 would give me a 2200… jiayou jiayou! Shall do more practice tests the next few days! :)

But well, I still skipped school, and it could have been a good thing. That’s because there was GP today, and I did not score well for it. So it was good that I avoided the torture of possibly receiving a disapproving or disappointed look from my tutor. Anyway, my GP score is a lousy 58.5%, a C grade. 26/50 for essay and 32.5/50 for compre. Horrible.

#1: Chemistry

It’s great that my Chem tutor swapped periods and thus took the first block, haha. I was amazed by my results because I thought I screwed up the MCQ paper big-time as I mentioned in my previous blog post. But LOL, I got 36/40, higher than quite a few practice papers I did at home which I spent only ~40 minutes, lolol! So lucky of me! xD Total percentage was 87%, 1% improvement from last CT, haha. :) Kinda screwed up Paper 2 compared to Paper 3. 61.5/72 for the former and 70/80 for the latter.

#2: Physics

Ermm, rmb I said in one of my previous posts that I could well get a 2 out of 10 for the first question of Paper 3 ’cause I couldn’t understand how the set-up works? Strangely enough, I was so lucky to get 8 marks, LOLLLL. Got 20 and 19 respectively for the 3-choose-2 questions, haha. So I got a 73/80 for Paper 3, which I really didn’t expect! But, compared to  Paper 3, I kinda screwed up Paper 2 with a 62/72. MCQ was superb though, with 38/40. :) Total was 90.1%, 0.1% improvement from CT2, lol.

#3: Math

My favourite! :) I was hoping to get >90 for both papers… and my wish came true! We went up one by one to get our papers. When it was my turn, I was quite excited, yet my tutor was saying “Jia Jin, Jia Jin” in a disapproving and draggy tonr. Oh dear, I thought I screwed up! But she ended off with “get fewer marks…” Yeah, indeed I was so greedy to get 96 and 97 respectively… That’s a 96.5%, and I’ve never gotten such high score for Math before! I hyperventilated when I saw the marks, lol. My tutor then told us the highest in the level is a 100+99, so I could well be one of the very top few in the level, cool! xD

#4: Econs

I didn’t have much hope for it… Was kinda dreading getting back the paper. But ahh, to my surprise, I got a 57, a C grade, coooool! That’s an improvement of 5 marks from CT2. :) Yay! My tutor said there would be a moderation of our marks, and I hope it will bump my score up to 60 marks, which is a B, lol. :)

I can’t believe it. On Friday, I did 5 MCQ papers. On Saturday, I did 10 MCQ papers. On Sunday, I did another 2 and attempted a few topical practices before revising the notes. I spent so much effort doing, yet… the Chem department decided it was time to kill us, argh.

The average time I took for each paper I did as practice is around 40 minutes. It is definitely a good timing for an 1-hour paper. :) I was so so confident for this Chem MCQ paper because despite taking so little time for each paper my average score is around 36 out of 40, heh. But no, I won’t repeat such a feat for today’s paper.

The standard was set unexpectedly high. The paper wasn’t difficult in terms of the knowledge involved, but it was just that, the thinking (and for some, calculation) process for each question was rather cumbersome, and that took up a lot of time! After 15 minutes, I realised I only finished the first 10 questions. That meant, I would spend 60 minutes for all 40 questions? And that indeed was the case. I started speeding up for the remaining 30 questions, and eventually, I spent 58 minutes to finish the paper. Hmm, no time to check my answers, so I just looked through all the ovals to confirm every question had its answer shaded.

Zzz. After the paper, my classmate checked answers with me, and that was when the horror came. For two of the questions, I realised I read either the question wrongly or the options wrongly, so argh, I got both of them wrong, of course. That’s basically because I was rushing through the paper. T_T

Sigh, I thought I could end my Prelims with a smile. But ah, I could not.

But okay, who cares? Prelims are officially over! It’s time for a well-deserved break! WOOHOO! xD I can’t believe I survived through 12 papers with a total duration of 23.5 hours in 11 days! COOL! Hahaha!

It’s a MCQ paper. 40 questions to be done in 1h 15min. I attempted all the JCs’ 09 Prelim papers, and got the hang of it, haha. Some papers were tougher, while some were easier, but I spent an average of 35 to 40 minutes for each paper, which is a nice 50% of the time provided. xD

RI’s 09 paper was rather manageable too and I also spent only around 40 minutes. I expected the real thing to be as easy, but it wasn’t. :\ Quite a number of the questions were tricky, and quite a few involved very tedious calculations and manipulation of mathematical equations. It was really a test of mathematical skills for such questions. I managed to survive through them, but I spent 50 minutes to finish the 40 questions, 10+ minutes more than my average timing. The extra 10+ minutes just show how exceedingly challenging the paper was.

I just hope for the best. :)

After the paper, I went to the gym with my friend. LOL, it seemed as if Prelims are over for me… but well, Prelims are over for my friend. I am left with, well, a Chem MCQ paper, and I guess I don’t have to study very hard for it? Anyway, it was a good gym session. I ran 1.6km, did some decent upper body exercises which had recently become rather flabby, hahaha. And oh, I’ve been eating a lot and not been exercising, so I was really scared I’m already 70kg! But hah, to my surprise, the machine showed 65.2kg, which was in fact lighter than my weight (66-67kg) before Prelims! Hmmm, Prelims made me lost weight. Must be because of all the hardcore mugging. :\

I continued to slack for a very long while with my friend, before I went home for a nap. Woke up at 6pm, and started spamming Chem MCQ papers from the 09 Prelims set. I did 5 in total before I retired for the night. :) How productive, haha.

It was an afternoon paper, so I took my own sweet time to get ready for it. Woke up at 9+am, had a good time doing last minute revision, then  had two bacang, or 肉粽 (rouzong) for lunch! Yummm, I love bacang… The fragrance of the fatty and oily meat is so enticing… ahhhh. Hahahaha. A good lunch before an (ahem, easy) paper! :D

Same as Chem Paper 2, the experimental planning component is put together with Paper 2 from this year onwards. The component is also worth 12 marks, thus the total score for Paper 2 is 72. Similarly, the duration is extended from 1h15min to 1h45min.

In the 1h45min paper, we had to finish short structured questions worth 42 marks, one 18-mark data analysis question and one 12-mark experimental planning question. So I thought, 1h 45min is definitely not sufficient! Thus I planned beforehand to finish the 42 marks in 45min, and spent around 30min each for the remaining two big questions.

The fact is, Physics experimental planning, unlike Chem’s, really requires the full 30 minutes… Because every experimental planning question is very open-ended, and involves a fixed format to be closely followed. The format includes objectives, experimental set-up diagram, procedure, safety precautions and steps taken to ensure reliable results.

For today’s paper, I think I spent about 25 minutes on experimental planning, and also another 25 minutes on data analysis. Strangely, I finished the first 42 marks in exactly 45 minutes, which I was really glad I did. :) I was left with only mere 10 minutes to check through my answers. But despite the time constraint, I found the paper much more manageable than Paper 3. Phew. Cool.

And oh, the experimental planning is about investigating how intensity of illumination on a light-dependent resistor affects its resistance. It seems much easier than the practices we have done in class. Phew! :) I did it without much trouble! But argh, no matter what, they should seriously give us a full 2 hours instead. Both data analysis and experimental planning require so so much time. It is really hard to do the paper without rushing in 1h 45 min. :\

By the way, when I went home, I had another bacang. 3 bacang in one day, how unhealthy, lolol.
